as other people have said, it's probably a way to further tighten control of women. illegal to be asexual = your husband can make a legal claim against you for refusing sex with him (or worse)

This is the consequences of western imperialism and pinkwashing. If we continue to justify imperialism by calling for the supposed liberation of queer people in other countries by our force, of course other countries are going to see LGBTQ as a tool of American imperialism.

I mean it’s not like they were accepting of queerness in the way we think of it in precolonial times- they may have been somewhat more accepting but applying western progressive values to them is in itself somewhat imperialist

Literally none of the states in Africa besides Egypt, Ethiopia, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and maybe Mali should really exist at all, the concept of the nation state and the idea that all land on earth must be administered by a nation state lest it be “terra nullus” are both distinctly European, and all the states in Africa are the remains of colonies.

the regency of Algiers had some legit cachet before the French overthrew the Dey, while they didn’t have much cultural distinction from the rest of the Maghreb like how Morocco did, they were a legitimate self established political entity (even if the mode of that establishment was forced devolution of power within the Ottoman Empire)
