Saying a slur with the intent of it harming or belittling another person is racist. Saying a slur because you don't know when it means either because you're young, stupid, or ignorant, is not exactly racist BY the definition of racism. Obviously nobody should be saying slurs, but at the end of the day we are all taught differently and some people may not have the same information as you.
Cierra should have known better than to use those slurs online. But the fact is, she didn't. Her upbringing did not teach her that. Which is odd, but not completely uncommon. Someone brought that word into her life and it seems that it wasn't until last year that she learnt it was wrong. I didn't know the n word shouldn't be said until I was 13. In middle school, people commonly used it to replace a word like friend or homie. Were we racist and hated black people? No. Just stupid and ignorant.
okay but cierra does know what it means though. it was used in context. she didn’t JUST use the c word, it was used as a modifier within the sentence. it takes a little more understanding of the word. i.e. you could mistakenly say bitch without understanding, but bitchy is much more unlikely.
okay but she currently lives in california, which has the largest asian population. it is also where they had the transcontinental train built. there is a lot of history of the c word there specifically. she has the resources to become educated on the topic based on where she lives, the fact that she has access to the internet, and that her friends are pr trained influencers.
also difference between when you were 13 and cierra is that you were using the word in replacement of homie or friend, cierra was using it as a feature she disliked about herself. Racism can be prejudice (an unfavorable opinion formed not based on reason) against a community. Calling your eyes similar to ethnic asian eyes and saying you dislike it falls under that.
It seems like we would both agree that Cierra isn't a stellar person. Obviously she's not winning any person of the year award. But I'm still not seeing racist per se. That would mean that she purposely was discriminating against those who are Asian in her story. I see more stupidity and ignorance than racism.
And I do agree, it was definitely evident that she probably knew what the word means and not the gravity. I genuinely believe that she must've known the history, but thought of it as "small eyes"? Honestly we will never know and that's fine. Hopefully she grows as a person and other people witnessing learn from this as well
it depends on how you define racism. how i see it is if you have prejudice/bias against a group of people. i think what she did as an act was racist, but is she herself racist i’m not sure. cause to be a person that is racist imo is repeated acts. but yeah i agree and hope she learns and grows.
