How do I tell my friends and the people around me how much I’m hurting without them feeling bad for or pitying me? I just want to be heard and know that there are people in my life that care that I’m not ok

Honestly? They’ll pity you and feel bad regardless because they care about you and want to help you not feel bad. A lot of people want to help fix things and can’t understand that sometimes you need someone to sit in the shit with you and not try to fix it. I’d suggest starting with, “hey if you’ve got the time to talk, I’d like to open up about some things that have been going on in my life. I’m not asking for solutions or asking for help, I just want someone to talk to and listen.”

Something my therapist said recently was: “you’ll have to trust people to be themselves, whatever that means. They’ll show you they care when they make the effort to be able to hear what you say and let what you say influence them. The goal isn’t and should never be complete/immediate change, but hopefully if you come to them with their hurt it’s something they can sit with”
