Part of it is that the reason some Cubans are struggling with deportation is because Obama got rid of the “dry foot wet foot” law that gave every Cuban who touched American land legal parole the day before the transfer of power to Trump on his first term

Obviously, Trump was not going to reinstate it, but then it gave more reason for Cubans to not support Democrats.

And Cubans have had a much easier time with immigration than any other group of Hispanics due to a series of laws passed in the 60’s after Bay of Pigs. Because of this, there is less empathy regarding immigration.

And in Florida politics, Cubans have cemented their place in the GOP with many Cuban-Americans holding high office in Florida positions. Back in the 80’s the GOP won over Cuban support by emphasizing their anti-communist stance, and many Cubans from the old Cuban exile still blame Kennedy for the failure of Bay of Pigs and the continued existence of Castro’s oppressive regime.

Younger generations of Cuban Americans may be more left leaning, but most have families with a history of voting republican for years.

And another interesting fact! When wet foot dry foot law still existed, some immigrants from other countries would pay Cubans who recently immigrated a good amount of to marry them in order to get legal residence in the country. Since Cubans would get residency rather quickly as soon as they got to the states, they would list the other immigrant as their spouse on the paperwork giving them legal residence.

And some suspect this was done in retaliation to Florida voting republican during the 2016 election.
