how many blocks deep in the water should a ship be? i’m building my first one for lore purposes and i don’t want it to look stupid

Depends on how big the ship is and the shape of the boat, but maybe look up some pictures of real ships? Cruise ships and pirate ships hold their weight differently, but both need to sink low enough to stay upright, but high enough not to flood. Good luck!

Mine isn't much bigger than the in-game vanilla ships and I did 5 blocks down

For a boat to float in real life, the weight of water displaced by the vessel has to equal the weight of the vessel. Meaning if I have a boat that takes up 1m^3 of space below the surface, then I can hold 1000kg of stuff on it, because the density of water is 1000kg/m^3. So… just think about that, I guess
