the whole “cigarettes pretentious dialogue” comment is the kind of takeaway you’d get if you haven’t seen any french cinema beyond breathless. just expand your palette a little more. jacques tati and louis malle are waiting on the other end.

i think a lot of french new wave is extremely overhyped. at least from the handful i’ve seen. cleo is pretty good tho. la haine is great. i like movies from most european countries but i consistently don’t enjoy french ones
