it’s always funny to me when people use the word “film bro” to describe a snob who watches long and challenging foreign films, because that terminolofy stems from the type of american who watches almost exclusively major releases and mainstream movies.

not really. i love marvel movies, but i think cinephiles should be watching older and lesser known stuff every so often. doesn’t have to be an every other day thing, but it’s important to watch the movies that inspired our favorite modern movies. i feel the same way about arthouse filmbuffs who should be watching a little more mainstream stuff.

i still fear it's gone over your head. you wouldn't be described as a "film bro" if you watch and enjoy mainstream movies. the meme is saying that like if you suggest to a film snob you wanna watch something mainstream and they insist you watch something more challenging and complex then you just seem pretentious. especially bc u can deeply analyze any movie

my point is that the terminology is constantly being misused. a “film bro” originally meant someone (normally a straight white man) who thinks they’re a film connoisseur when in reality, they watch mostly mainstream, american movies, and have hardly stepped out of that bubble. nowadays, people throw the term around for anyone who shows interest in anything niche or foreign.

see my definition of film is someone who doesn't watch mainstream movies and only wants to watch niche and foreign films. maybe that's the disconnect?

yes, that’s your definition of a film bro. if you google the definition, you’ll see that a film bro is a derogatory term for someone with shallow film knowledge and a very limited, primarily western/mainstream pallet.
