LOTR. Healthy male friendships, fighting for the greater good, even the smallest most inconsequential person can make a difference (message of the books/movies), amazing music and cinematography (for the time).

Grave of the Fireflies. You watch it once and you will be sadder for life, and you’ll never support another war again. It is the most powerful anti-war movie yet made.

tbh The Substance. it’s an allegory for womanhood within patriarchy, especially in the entertainment industry, and the symbolism and message are so powerful

To do some recent ones, The Zone of Interest & Killers of the Flower Moon. Zone & Killers both encapsulate ways that evil manifests in this world.

I happen to be a big David Lynch fan and I highly recommend Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway for the mindfuck. I feel like Eraserhead is a rite of passage. I feel like The Elephant Man has an essential message.

I've never seen that. I'll have to check that out. I did watch Johnny Got His Gun not long ago. There's Born on the Fourth of July, the Killing Fields, Hacksaw Ridge

Come and See is another really good one. It’s great but I never want to watch it again.
