Here’s my opinion on Sinners as a Christian. I don’t believe that religion is what saved Sammy like many Christians. The version of Christianity that slaves were allowed to practice was very restrictive. It prioritizes religion over relationship, which-

, which is what the Bible teaches against. Sammy tried to use religion which didn’t work because he didn’t have the relationship. Also, the Lord’s Prayer not working. We learn as Christians that the devil knows scripture as well. He even tried to use it against Jesus, so of course it didn’t work when Sammy tried to use it. Overall, I loved the movie and all of the symbolism.

Christianity was used to essentially enslave native Irish and African populations. Given that vampirism in this movie essentially represents assimilation, collectivism, and loss of cultural identity it doesn’t make sense for religion to work bc vampirism and Christianity were portrayed to be essentially two sides of the same coin

That would make sense. What I’ve learned is that around 80% of slaves were from predominantly Muslim countries. A lot of them were forced into Christianity. Which wouldn’t work. Due to the fact that Christianity is about the relationship more than the religion. If someone is forced into it, they’re less likely to build that relationship. Especially when the people that are forcing it on them is their enslavers.
