what kind of genre do you want a recommendation for, for mystery i would recommend memento, oldboy, mother, eyes wide shut, psycho, and seven. some of my personal favorites are a tale of two sisters (korean), eastern promises and pluto which is a netflix anime that released recently
I wanna preface this by saying that Rian Johnson has become a sort of Shamalan in my eyes: he had an element in one of his earliest and most successful movies that he then turned into a recurring and overplayed gimmick. In Shamalans case, it was his end-of-movie twists, in Rian Johnson it’s his “expectation subversions” (similar to Shamalan’s twists but not quite the same) The first twenty minutes of Knives Out sets up what appears to be a solid murder mystery story with Daniel Craig giving-
Probably the only good performance in the film imo. Then it goes from a “who-dunnit” mystery movie into telling you exactly who did it, why she did it, and it becomes a cat and mouse chase, with Daniel Craig shoved to the sidelines in favor of a significantly less interesting character. Throw in a lame third act twist for more “expectation subversions” and you get a movie that’s not a mystery movie, nor is it really a thrilling cat and mouse story, so what is it? A boring, disjointed mess.
Also some minor nitpicks but those are infinitely less important than the fact that the movie feels like it doesn’t know what it wants to be genre-wise, or who it wants as it’s protagonist. Namely the fact that their lame justification for why we should overlook our heroine’s medical negligence makes no sense. “She could tell the difference between the weight of the bottles implicitly or something” does she always refill them to the exact same volume? How would she implicitly know the-
Okay do with this what you will, but I watched it with my father, a healthcare professional and here’s what he had to say. The medicine bottles DO have the exact same fill every time. That is how medicine works. She’d go to the pharmacy and they’d give her the bottles filled the exact same amount. Second of all, those two medicines actually DO feel different. It’s VERYslight, but anyone well trained would be able to feel the difference.
Her entire job was to administer this guy those medicines. She would be able to tell. And yeah like I mentioned of course each bottle would have the same fill every time. If one was even a little off that would be a massive crime and pharmacies do not play with that sort of thing, WSPECIALLY when it comes to controlled substances
