I’d say that’s very dependent. There’s numerous older movies that people know the ending to without actually having watched it (Casablanca, Godfather, Classic Universal Monster movies, etc.). Doesn’t help cultural osmosis is a thing with parodies and references being dropped galore. But yeah, that sucks shit.
Like I said, cultural osmosis doesn’t help, especially since a lot of phrases from those older movies have become common parlance. I think we can all say we know “Play it again, Sam” is the truncated version of what’s actually said in Casablanca, even though most people these days probably haven’t actually watched the movie. I think people just don’t really care anymore.
But lots of people do care. The thing that really instilled this within me is when I went to see The Fall Guy. That was a really good movie, but the third act was ruined for me because in the movie one of the characters blatantly spoils the ending of Thelma and Louise, a classic movie that I had not seen at the time but had it on my watchlist
Don’t get me wrong, knowing Snape whacks Dumbledore after I dipped from the Harry Potter movies after 5 was disappointing, among other spoilers over the years. But realistically, I don’t think there’s anything we can really do, unless you really want to no-life the Top 100/250/500 movies lists before browsing the internet again/watching new movies.
So what, I’m supposed to say “oh spoiler: Ebeneezer Scrooge wakes up after being visited by three ghosts and becomes a better person” because I shouldn’t assume someone has seen at least one version of the Christmas Carol? I don’t spoil plot twists or the solution to mysteries in older movies because that’s part of the fun but there’s a line.
If the Fall Guy wasn’t going to spoil Thelma and Louise for you, The Simpsons or Lady Gaga would’ve. It’s almost a trope at this point. Look just because you had one bad experience doesn’t mean the whole world needs to censor themselves to protect your feelings. If you watch anything nowadays you run the risk of seeing a “spoiler” for something you haven’t seen. It’s on you to protect yourself from spoilers not everyone else
There comes a point where you have to accept that people are going to spoil things whether you’ve watched it or not. From there, you’re gonna have to figure out if you’re gonna have to no-life a literal century’s worth of media or make exceptions for a lot of these older movies since they’re still part of the culture after all this time. I get everyone should put the kibosh on spoilers for something that came out on Friday, but something as old as WWII is pushing it.
