There’s honestly too many. It became the standard in the 70’s and now it’s the “cinematic” look. It limits the height of the frame in favor of something wider and it’s just kind of thoughtlessly used. I would say good examples are any time Spielberg used it. Bad ones are any that never take advantage of the wider frame. In fact a lot of movies in the last thirty years deliberately kept the subjects in the dead center of frame knowing it would be cropped for TV anyway.
Fair, I guess I haven’t seen enough newer movies to really notice it, seems like the trend now is going toward mostly taller “imax like” ratios. I think a lot of dp’s probably just like using anamorphic’s and it’s (2.39 overuse) a byproduct of that. Though I do think 2:39:1 can be effective for closeups even though it’s usually associated with landscape set pieces
