It’s not actually about the differences in appearance between them. It’s about the fact that people who suck at making movies overwhelmingly prefer digital. They love the shortcuts it offers, such as correcting lighting (poorly) in post rather than lighting a set properly. It’s why many films today look like shit despite superior tech.

Fun fact. Dune one of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen was shot on digital it was only after that it was then converted to film and then converted back to digital. Just a fun fact

Digital films can look beautiful too as long as there isn’t some fraud behind the camera.

That argument only makes sense though if you’re color timing your 35mm film photochemically, which very few 35mm films do nowadays. Even those shot on 35mm have, for over two decades now, been scanned in for their final color timing pass where stuff such as lighting and color can be readjusted I’m not saying this to come across as snarky or a know it all, just that I don’t think most people realize that how we process 35mm has changed since the early days of film

Yep, frauds shoot on film too. It’s just that they prefer digital.

Wdym, digital cameras didn’t exist when Lynch was filming that in the 80’s? Nah in all seriousness that’s cool af. And also does show that digital can look just as stunning as film, film can look as stunning as digital, and combining both can be stunning too! It’s whose behind the camera that matters, not the format it’s shot on

I agree. I’m actually the OP of the original post I wasn’t trying to start a debate I just wanted to see the consensus because I have the same feeling that it doesn’t matter both can look excellent and both can also look like shit depending on who’s shooting it

It didn’t come across like you were trying to start a debate dw And yeah totally! It’s who’s behind the camera that matters. Blade Runner looks great and was shot on film, whereas Blade Runner 2049 was shot on digital and also looks great. I think the marvel films by and large look crap despite being shot mostly digitally, but there’s also films shot on 35mm that look crap too
