why is everyone in the film community so triggered with opinions? you can not like something just because you dont like it- not everything need a reason or a 50 page essay behind it

It’s a valid opinion though. Better than people who say they don’t like something, and their reasons as to why are ill informed/are reasons that don’t actually make something bad.

How is an opinion with explanation less valid than just saying something sucks

Because a lot of people who try to critique movies have no idea what they’re talking about and have never even tried to make a film in their life. They might make criticisms which are technically valid, but some of their own favorite films might be eligible for the same critiques: the difference is just that they didn’t like the film they’re critiquing. Many people will simply dislike a film, which is completely valid, but then just try to critique it to explain why they didn’t like it.

To be fair, you did specify “sucks” which is sort of an objective statement, so if someone said that without reasons I would agree with you.

I more so mean that saying that you liked/were indifferent to/disliked a movie and nothing else is a completely valid opinion

Every opinion with reasons is valid. You shouldn’t have to know about the craft of filmmaking to give a valid opinion just like how you shouldn’t have to be a line cook to know if something tastes good. It’s all just opinions.

Oh yea for sure. You definitely don’t need to be a filmmaker to critique a movie. I just think a lot of times, the critiques people give films could be said about some of their favorite films as well, meaning it doesn’t actually make the film “bad”. Every film can be criticized with valid points. A lot of the time, it really just comes down to personal preference and what people like. I agree with you though.
