Also, it feels weird like, why should someone need to justify liking more indie films? I’d understand if they were like pretentious about it, but just naming obscure films in a thread asking for recommendations is just expaling taste, I love analyzing shit, wondering what this or that means, and film is filled with movies like that, I kinda wonder how I would feel if when talking about that how I would feel if it was called being “performative”
because it’s a safer bet. also movies like funny games or come and see aren’t really that obscure. it’s not like they’re recommending some 5 hour silent film from germany recorded on a xbox kinect. films like come and see or funny games are pretty accessible for people first getting into foreign cinema
You can’t just be hyperbolic to ignore the pretentiousness of the movies. 5 hour movies are wildly unrealistic, but I just looked up Come and See and it’s nearly 3 HOURS LONG. Funny Games just sounds miserable and pretentious. And I don’t think anyone here is interested in the obscure movies in the comments. Notice how the 1 comment to get upvotes is the one recommending La La Land.
and your point is? length has nothing to do with pretentiousness. 3 hour films like oppenheimer or killers of the flower moon are super popular. la la land is also literally like 10 minutes less than come and see. also as someone who has actually seen funny games it’s not pretentious. i’m sorry you’re weirdly nationalistic about movies and can’t get out of your little bubble. nothing wrong with liking american films but calling a movie pretentious for just being foreign is weird.
I thought Oppenheimer was very pretentious. I didn’t see Killers of the Flower Moon, but 31/2 hours is fucking diabolical. I think Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan were objectively pretentious, so idk how that will convince me otherwise lol. And La La Land warrants its length. It has so much whimsy and it’s directed so good with characters so compelling that it makes you feel like you were only watching it 90 minutes and makes you want more. La La Land is the exact of pretentiousness.
dude you literally just named two of the most well known directors of all time and called them pretentious. i’m starting to think you call everything that doesn’t have iron man pretentious. i guess anything that makes you think even in the slightest is pretentious slop. (not shading la la land that movie is great) also la la land is literally a modern day iteration of umbrellas of cheurbourg, a french movie. guess it’s pretentious🤷♂️
I’m fine with reading subtitles. I watch a lot of anime and that’s not pretentious normally. Every french film I hear about is always about sex and politics and cigarettes and shit. It always sounds alienating to the audience. Foreign directors seem to only care about how they want the movie to turn out.
dude you clearly haven’t heard about many french films. they’ve made some of the most colorful and expressive movies i’ve ever seen. sorry you’re xenophobic i guess. also there’s nothing wrong with politics in movies. art in general is inherently political. it’s natural to want to make something that expresses your thoughts on the world.
This is not to say that there aren’t men who act performatively and lie about stuff they like to appeal to woman, but I don’t think I really applies here, and it dose erk me as I like to think I value genuineness, so the idea of people perceiving me my interest as fake dose kinda hurt, and I think it’s kind of rude and mean spirited, I always try to take people at their words until they prove themselves to be liars
