Not to mention the village was a real romanian village, he lied to them about the nature of the film and barely paid them, and now the whole world is laughing at these poor people in Romania

The film dehumanizes both the real Romanians and Kazakhs. I know it’s satirical and I appreciate its intent but I think it’s possible to take satire too far. However the person in the screenshot is very clearly racist. I’m scared they would watch Borat and actually enjoy it for the wrong reasons

i agree that the portrayal of Kazakhs and Romani is problematic and the satire kind of goes too far but i also think the movie wouldn’t have been able to expose American racism and antisemitism the way it did if Borat’s character was less ridiculous. i wish it included actual Romani and Kazakh perspectives to offset that. but i think the fact that said racist in the screenshot refuses to watch it kind of shows the intention/point was to be a caricature of racism rather than a racist caricature

i just think it’s funny that of all the movies about antisemitism it’s Borat that made this list. like who puts Borat next to Sinners lol
