Dune’s setting definitely has dystopian elements, but that isn’t the focus at all. Ultimately it’s a galactic imperial space opera, though its scope is fairly limited to the political happenings on the desert planet Arrakis. Here you find the native peoples’ struggle against imperial subjugation for resource extraction of the most valuable resource known to the human empire, the noble Atreides family’s conflict with major elements of the empire, and many other complex and interwoven themes.
