i took a class where we read it and talked about how homer intentionally wrote it so that you don’t know if odysseus is being truthful or not. all his men are dead so there’s no one to corroborate and odysseus doesn’t have any evidence of anything. he tells the story to the people on Scheria to try to get them to help him get home, and at the end they’re like “we don’t know if this is at all true but we really enjoyed it so we’ll help”

and odysseus’ main character trait is that he’s clever and creative as opposed to traditionally heroic/brave so it’s very plausible that he would make up some bullshit like this
