I don’t usually watch foreign movies and I’m sure there are good ones but I feel like everyone glazing them are usually just trying to look unique. Are there any foreign movies that don’t give off pretentious vibes to y’all? All I can think of is Parasite
I get so confused when I see these kinds of “filmbros when you watch this instead of 3-hour foreign films” posts because why are we hating on foreign films all of a sudden? Which ones do you guys think are truly pretentious and hate seeing people loving?

Why pretentious vibes? Like they’re just movies in a language other than English some of them are slop some of them are really good movies and many are just fine…

A lot of them just seem so pretentious to me idk. Maybe some of them are worth it but it they are rarely entertaining and no one else watches them so you can’t really talk to people about them.

I think assuming they’re “rarely entertaining” is crazy. Like Spanish surrealist cinema is not everyone’s cup of tea but you have 90s Hong Kong action movies and classic horror from Japan. There are incredible dramas made in Iran and low budget schlock coming out of Nollywood. Bollywood is the only place still making massive scale musicals like the old MGM ones. Why would you assume anything not in English is “rarely entertaining” when Hollywood produces a LOT of slop that is rarely entertaining?

I’ve seen plenty of foreign movies to say they aren’t usually entertaining. They normally “thinking pieces” or whatever

La Haine, Oldboy, Breathless, Sentimental Value, 8 1/2, Zone ofInterest, the Taste of Cherry (couldn’t finish it), the Seventh Seal (couldn’t finish), Stalker (couldn’t finish). All foreign films glazed beyond belief that just couldn’t hold my attention at all Oldboy and Breathless in particular just pissed me off. The only foreign movies I’ve liked are Parasite, Mickey 17, and Chungking Express.

If you didn’t like Sentimental Value or 8 1/2 or Taste of Cherry I think maybe you just…don’t like movies? Like those are three radically different films shot differently from different moments and in different places. What movies DO you like?

That’s an incredibly mean thing to say. “You don’t like these movies I like? Well then clearly you don’t like movies!!!!” That’s not how it fucking works. My favorite movies are the Social Network, the Departed, LOTR trilogy, and No Country for Old Men.

I just mean if a “movie about movies”, a heartfelt family drama, and an innovative character portrait (plus some action named above) don’t do it for you I’m confused as to how you like the genre. But now it makes sense!

Oh one of the movies you listed is literally a remake of a Hong Kong movie! So you just dislike foreigners or can’t read subtitles.

bro bro i thought we could agree a little cause taste of cherry was horrible and anyone that likes it is just actually pretentious but HOW do you have an issue with old boy yet you like chudking express(also a nothingburger of a movie)
