Keep in mind that hearing the word “cock” in a movie especially from a child actor or seeing any kind of demonic imagery in the 70s was actually like seeing a video of a man being beheaded. This was the same generation that thought the Beatles were wild and too vulgar and heavy

yeah but the movie is called 'the exorcist' so there's no suspense there

^^a lot of people look at a movie out of the context of its time and think it’s funny rather than scary. It’s similar to Jaws in that way.

Yeah today the practical effects in jaws look stupid but back then it send people running out of the theater screaming

not in the same way. I haven't seen it in a while, but (spoilers for kill bill) I remember not being sure if she'd actually do it at the end. the title is her mission, sure, but it's not called "Uma Thurman Kills Bill at the End of the Second One"

No, but at no point in the movie is it a mystery what's happening to her, unless you went in without knowing the title

Dramatic irony is fine but it's not at all scary imo

bro everyone knew the exorcist was about a possessed girl. i don’t know how young you are but nobody was shocked to learn it was about an exorcism. the only scary aspect for the generation was just the use of a child actor using vulgar language and acting heavily out of the norm for the time. it’s a good movie but scary is a stretch by today’s standards and is moderately acceptable for the time it was released
