people who use basic as an insult would probably define it like that, yeah. I think what op is saying is that watching fun, popular movies that aren't necessarily deep or complex isn't a moral failing or a sign of being shallow or incurious. some people just watch movies to have a good time, and that's okay. It doesn't mean they aren't capable of handling more complex subject matter, or that they're stupid.
i would consider it a moral failing only if they’re that way with all art. if they feel that way about movies but read a lot, or are really into paintings or something that exposes them to culture in a serious sense, that’s fine. but i absolutely find it a moral failing to not engage with any form of “deeper” art, because that tells me they have no desire to think about complex subject matters, which i would say is pretty shallow.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having basic movies at the top of your list. Just like I don’t think there’s anything wrong with listening to and loving pop music. But if that’s the ENTIRE scope of your taste, then yeah, a conversation about movies and music with you is probably gonna bore me a little bit after a while. I also like blockbuster movies and pop music. But it’s the deep cuts in people’s taste, the stuff we don’t share, that interests me most in a conversation.
