No, I know what woke means, it’s cutting off your nose to spite your face. It means justifying any insane crap just for the sake of staying together, and in the case of Superman, it means calling him an immigrant for no reason, Superman is AMERICAN and he wouldn’t be who he was if he wasn’t raised in America.
Most important is that he was raised in America, which is what I had said (I know #1 said born and raised, I think it was just a typo) but when people assimilate to America, especially in the way clark did (raised here his whole life) he is a tried and true American. Theres a reason they call him a boy scout.
Um… Superman is literally an alien like born on Krypton. He’s an immigrant to not just America but Earth. He has super powers because he’s not even a human?? 💀 He is the way he is because he doesn’t want Earth destroyed like his home planet and feels it’s his responsibility to be good because he’s more capable of protecting ALL of humanity not just a country
It’s forcing an “immigrant story” where there isn’t one, which I would consider woke. I am a Romanian immigrant, born and raised in Romania after the fall of the USSR, I know Superman is not from America but to call a fictional superhero who speaks perfect English an immigrant story because he is from a fictional planet is disrespectful to us real immigrants. It is not “inspiring” in the way the white saviors think it is.
So your personal story here is irrelevant and really doesn’t change anything. Superman wasn’t born in the US, he has a falsified birth certificate and social security card, he was sent here seeking refuge from a dying planet. He is an immigrant who is here illegally. Knowing English doesn’t do shit for your citizenship or else ICE would be having a way harder time rounding people up. The superman is an immigrant story has been running far longer than now where immigration is being demonized.
You just ignored everything I said to say “nuh uh.” And your point with the English doesn’t say anything about why Superman doesn’t work as an immigrant story. Like what does that have to do with Superman being sent here as a refugee from another planet and residing here illegally yet staying and contributing because he cares and wants to do good for his home? And telling people that Superman is an immigrant story is more of a message to the people who are cheering on mass deportation and 1/2
And becoming increasingly comfortable in their xenophobia that a character who is very widely loved and seen as a symbol of America and American values is also an immigrant and one who is here illegally at that. It’s a message to stop policing who can and can’t be American to those who want America to be of, by, and for a certain group of people. And the original creators of Superman were children of immigrants who dealt with xenophobia daily so making Superman an immigrant story was always ther
Yes as of now thats how it works, but specifically that amendment was meant to only apply to people who’s birth parents were legal citizens. But in the case of a literal alien, I think it would suffice that his adoptive parents would suffice. Though generally, kids born in America are American
