I feel like there is no polite way to ask. People can volunteer that information about themselves, however to ask is a little invasive to a topic they may not wanna discuss.

I before I was diagnosed would get asked by people i knew so if you are close to them you can probably just ask. I personally found it hilarious, but everyone is definitely different
