Harry Potter is my longest running special interest and I can’t let it go no matter how hard I try. I distance myself from it as much as I can (indulging in the content/merch second hand, speaking out against JKR, etc.), but I feel like it’s not enough

Ok the parts that support her at all are either monetary or public support. If you are interacting privately and not creating or promoting new work too much then you’re not doing much to support her at all. Especially if you’re speaking out against her. Just please don’t watch the new show or anything.

I feel ashamed whenever I do engage with it, which has been a long-running issue I’ve had surrounding ALL my special interests. Just when I was starting to embrace it, all this stuff made me feel terrible about it again, and nothing has been able to replace it.

Most of her products for harry are contract based. She already got the money whether you buy it from store shelves or not. So like if you want to get a harry potter game from gamestop, shes not making money off that, same goes for like, if you wanted to buy the illustrated books from barnes and noble or something

I think its okay to like Harry Potter honestly, because its become so much larger than JKR. Yeah sure there are things in the books that arent great, but Harry potter is to the point where she's no longer its creator, we are. If that makes sense

People have gone way too far with this shit. Do what makes you happy. Any monetary contribution is so small it doesn’t matter. And if people are that bent out of shape about something you enjoy, that’s their problem.

I’m queer and Jewish too, so I feel an extra weird sort of conflict… I don’t know, I’m just ranting now

I second this. Enjoying something privately that you’ve already paid for doesn’t hurt anyone. It’s the public support and need to consume new merch/content that’s a problem n

Definitely not quite true. Purchasing products tells retailers that there is still a demand for them, thus leading to more contracts.

As a trans person, Harry Potter has become a litmus test for me. People who have this attitude are simply people I can’t fully trust to have my best interest at heart. Rowling has said she considers any support for the series to be support of her values; at this point, people over 18 still publicly engaging either don’t pay attention enough to know or don’t care. Neither of those are people I can fully feel safe around.
