Was supposed to be studying but my friend asked me what my favorite shark is and I started an hour long conversation because sharks are my special interest

I am also scuba certified and have had a lot of real life interactions with them, AND I am majoring in marine and freshwater biology so this is sort of my career now

my favorite shark are sandbar sharks, i caught one on a research vessel once (studying sharks, so she wasn’t harmed and was released right after) and she was beautiful!!! i have too many favorites to really pick but i also like great whites, tigers, makos, black and white tips, and lemons i just think they’re all silly :)

In the uterus of the sand tiger shark, the largest embryo eats its smaller siblings (sometimes dozens) before birth. This extreme “intrauterine cannibalism” means most mothers give birth to just two highly developed pups

The cookiecutter shark doesn’t just bite, it twists. After latching on with suction lips, it spins its body like a drill to carve out a perfectly round plug of flesh

replying to the “in the uterus….” but how common are cases where they don’t eat eachother? does this mean the pups are less likely to survive?

iirc it happens with every pregnancy! i forget the exact reasoning but if i had to guess it’s to ensure the one to get born is strong and likely to survive
