I’m all for unmasking but holy shit people that doesn’t mean actively being a dick because “social norms are stupid”. You can’t just burp/cough in my face then say “well saying excuse me is stupid because it’s just my bodily functions”

i believe everyone should feel at least 25% shame/embarrassment in any given situation honestly

There’s a difference between not following societal norms that are restrictive and not being respectful or empathetic

i think there are plenty of social norms that are well and good and are just meant for politeness such as covering when you sneeze and cough and minimizing the effects of a burp or toot. And let’s be so fr, plenty of neurotypicals don’t follow those rules and many of us don’t like that (such as when they chew with their mouths open)

Some societal rules are in place to help our immunocompromised friends. Let’s not pretend it’s breaking barriers down when you’re actually just putting people at risk

This, and also, you cannot expect all of society to accommodate your every need because you are neurodivergent. You have a responsibility to learn how to function in this society and with other people, and cannot mistreat them or expect them to cater to you just because you are neurodivergent

No fr I went on a date with a ND man the other day we were at his house and he just farts out of nowhere and then told me that he went to the bathroom earlier and somehow got poop on his phone and was joking about it like wtf..????

I feel like this a weird way to frame it. Why are we burping/coughing in peoples faces. Saying excuse me in that situation doesn’t help at all. That’s the point that unmasking makes. Saying excuse me after being rude is functionally meaningless.

Does “pardon me” work as an appropriate substitute?

I think it’s the case that many, not all, autistic people lack empathy. Makes me wonder the role empathy plays in the neurology.

To an extent, but actively going up to someone to do shit like that is also a breach of personal space and a possible health hazard.

I guess my issue is that (in my experience) there are a number of ND ppl who have had negative experiences with weird unspoken social rules that they swing the other direction and like actively try to break them or be like “all social rules are dumb” and that shit been pissing me offfff

Not doing it at all works as an appropriate substitute.

I don’t think covering you moth when you sneeze or cough are meant purely for politeness. You’re spread germs around that can possibly get others sick. That is the issue. Plus, they can just be gross such as snot coming out during a sneeze or a gross smell during a burp.

Nope, that’s just a stereotype from NT people who don’t understand that there are myriad ways to feel and express empathy, we just process it much more differently than NTs do.

As an autistic person diagnosed with Asperger’s, I can tell you right now that many autistic people I know (because many of us flock together) can be downright assholes, know they are, and not give one shit.

Doesn’t mean they’re without empathy. We don’t need to keep spreading lies about ourselves.

? Covering your mouth and nose while coughing is to minimize germs spread Also breath stinks and so does farts which is why they are minimized

there are some ND people that will do stuff like burp/cough openly in close proximity to others or do other gross/uncomfortable things and defend it by just saying that they're ND

So you’re saying there aren’t autistic people who are rude and always claim to be right solely because they’re always right and can’t be wrong? Because I feel like I have to deal with that shit on a daily basis with some friends.

No, I’m pretty sure they’re saying that you shouldn’t do it at all. Like randomly punching someone in the face and then saying, “Oops, sorry about that,” after like that does anything meaningful besides making the puncher feel better about themselves.

Huh. I haven’t really noticed that in my personal life. I think they’re just being assholes and no amount of masking will fix that. I can see that being a good point to make, it was just framed in a way that was confusing to me.

I have two friends who are like this and it annoys the fuck outta me, but I do love both of them. They’re both good dudes and one is like an older brother to me. But it is what it is. They can be kinda douchey at times in an un-empathetic way. But this isn’t a “Fuck people with Asperger’s” post. In part because I literally have it. 🙃
