Why do neurotypicals say one thing, mean another, and hope that you’ll somehow understand that they don’t mean what they said?

- because they’re afraid of confrontation and hope they can get a message across without it

- because many customs around implied meanings allow the hearer the chance to respond, change, or correct something in a way that saves face, without someone outright telling them what they must do. Some well-meaning people use implied meanings for this purpose, not realizing that it isn’t effective when not everyone understands the custom that’s in play.
