the hardest part of being autistic with an autistic mom is that I had to accommodate all of her sensory needs and value all her interests from the time I was a literal baby, but she never had to do the same for me because she raised me “out of needing it”

I have seen autism in several generations including parents, and it can be very tough when they don’t realize how their wants/needs interact with those of others (at least not in a way that’s fair)

Noooo… that is difficult… I’m guessing she didn’t raise you out of needing it but just raised you to feel like you didn’t have a choice

Honestly I’m going to therapy now partly because I don’t wanna be that mom

LITERALLY, she’s only just now accepting that she’s probably autistic

Definitely. It’s a difficult double standard when you have a mother who routinely prompts you to do chores by pointing at a pile and wordlessly screaming until it is gone, but refused to listen to you cry as a toddler because you were supposed to use your words. I’m grateful for being diagnosed and counseled so young, but it doesn’t mean that I’m cured the way my family expects me to be

😭 that is such a mess. I’m sorry to hear it. At least you are equipped to break the cycle by understanding where your boundaries end and other people’s begin.

That’s a good way to see it, thank you
