I’m the only autistic person in my family (I was adopted, and not diagnosed until I was 20) they made incorrect assumptions about my behavior, and made it seem like I was bad on purpose. I think it really has affected me. can anyone else relate?

i was diagnosed at 18, none of my close family members are diagnosed, (i suspect a few) but i have one distant relative who is. the level of support i need varies drastically day by day, and on harder days my parents would tell me not to "act r-worded." i've found that my negative inner voice uses similar verbiage to what i heard growing up.

Yea but with social anxiety and selective mutism. People thought I was being quiet on purpose and just wanted me to “come out of my shell”
