I’m formally diagnosed with autism and adhd and I actively recommend pursuing a formal autism diagnosis, though I DO recommend getting a formal adhd dx. Why? Autism dx doesn’t open any doors. There’s no special meds or therapies. BUT it can prevent you from getting citizenship in certain countries. It can make you less likely to win custody battles over your kids. Whereas adhd has meds (LIFE CHANGING meds btw) that you can only access with formal diagnosis.
But also yes healthcare in the US is so unacceptable 😭 I was having seizures and they booked me 15 months out with the neurologist. AND the neurologist actually changed its accepted insurance providers during that time, without notifying me, so I paid full price for a visit that was covered by insurance when I set the appointment. Gr8.
The only disclaimer to this is if you’re in school and only have autism, because you can get disability accommodations. In the workforce, you don’t have to have a formal dx to get disability accommodations. You just ask for them. No employer has ever even asked for a doctor’s note. But ~70% of ppl with ASD have adhd so I suggest to go after that instead
