my friends and i call each other special all the time, that’s just our humor, i don’t really understand getting angry about a joke made in good faith

I mean I feel like problematic jokes between friends who don’t actually mean it are fine? Idk exactly what kinds of jokes that persons making but I don’t see it as any different to two friends being racist to each other for the bit, while absolutely not meaning it and not actually being racist in actual life.

It is a bit insensitive in the context of the og post tho fs, responding to someone being upset because their friend was ableist with “well me and my friend are jokingly ableist so idk why you’re complaining” is weird asf

the butt of those jokes is always making fun of someone more disabled than you are is the thing, and something along the lines of “at least i’m not as stupid as Them!” which i think there’s no way to make those jokes in a way that isn’t harmful and ableist, especially when the people making saying that stuff are never going to be the demographic most affected by it, so the joke is always just putting intellectually disabled people down.

with those jokes, at least if you’re both of the same demographic you’re affected equally and it’s not a disability you’re making fun of and you both actually deal with the consequences of bigotry but i’d be hard pressed to ever say myself or anyone with high functioning autism is remotely the same as someone with a high support needs intellectual disability, ykwim? they’re just not the same at all or even comparable really, and it’s a disability so it feels extra gross to make fun of.
