This app was advertised as a way to make friends anonymously through shared communities but ppl just upvote stuff and never actually message or reply, it’s just basically scrolling Reddit at this point. How come?

False advertising I’m afraid. It was originally advertised as an anonymous way to get the gossip and talk with other people at your own school. It works quite well for that. Even made a couple friends via the app. Double anonymous (no names, no usernames) is not good for making online friends, and their whole “get a username!” update never caught on. Double anon makes talking easier, but it removes the human connection factor.

It should not have been advertised like that If you want a way to anonymously make friends Reddit or tumblr would actually be better I think

I don’t personally see it as a means to build true friendships, but I do wish more people were interested in using it to carry out thoughtful conversations, at least in the replies 🤧

yikyak was only for college students until it merged with sidechat a few years ago. when the merge happened, the app was also revamped & turned into a reddit-esc app

Wym I see ppl post about stuff like their special interest, or asking for advice on stuff, why is that stuff (the half that is worth Interacting with) not getting the interacting haha

Before there were usernames tho we had signature emoji icons assigned so you’d know if the same person was posting something

The signature icons came a couple months after I downloaded the app actually. They’re still there as an option but barely anybody uses them.

except prior to that it was a location-based app without any restrictions in place re: age or schooling

as far as individual communities go though, I think the Neurodivergent group here is pretty chill and sociable. I appreciate y’all

well it was originally marketed for college kids and i wouldn’t say it was ever a platform that fostered friendships. most of the stuff posted was just gossip and asking for hook ups on the chat board (rip)

oh my bad, you’re right, I didn’t realize it was being marketed to college students back in the location-locked days too
