i have a question for my fellow autists: do people messing around all the time make you more drained than a regular social interaction would be? i’ve found the more someone messes around with me, the more drained i am. is this just me or am i not alone 😭

yes! i love my friends sm. but when they start joking around more than normal, like jokingly throwing things at each other, or just things like that. i definitely get more drained and go more quiet bc idk what to do w myself in the situation. i just sit there laughing or smiling bc idk what else to do😅

I interpreted “messing around” as like teasing, but I see you mean something else. But while I’m in this thought- I hate when people tease me, unless we’re like super close. Mostly bc I can’t tell if they’re being serious or not and it causes a lot of anxiety in me. But I also see what you mean with people joking around and such.

sorry that sounded weird i only had so many characters lol, i basically meant is it more draining when people are joking a lot in a basic social setting. so take a regular social interaction with nothing really happening vs one with the other person joking a lot. that second one is harder to deal with because its more draining, or at least that’s how it feels for me.

this is just my thinking but it would make sense for it to be more tiring bc i assume u usually have to go through more of an extensive internal thought process to be able to determine whether a person is actually joking vs being serious by taking into account their body language, tone, facial expressions, other ppls reactions, etc in order to come to a conclusion. so doing this over & over again repeatedly in one convo is gonna tire u out whereas in a normal convo u dont usually have to do that

also when someone is joking & ur kinda put in the spot where u have to figure out whether theyre joking or being serious it can feel stressful so being exposed to that stress repeatedly under a short period of time might also wear u down
