Hot take but “high functioning” autism shouldn’t be considered an offensive term. Its like high functioning depression. Your struggles aren’t *lesser*, you just objectively function better in society. Whether you do behind closed doors is neither here no

Completely agree ngl And I hate how some people try to replace it with high/low support needs because even though I’m high functioning it doesn’t mean I don’t also need support ❓

I mean, it’s not really considered the appropriate term to use by most people anymore for this reason, but also because it implies that others are “low functioning”. Most people use “low/medium/high support needs” to describe it now

Not saying I agree or disagree but the best point I’ve heard on the topic is when you assign someone high or low “functioning” you’re really categorizing them on their ability to work and make money. So the conversation becomes are we focusing on baseline (what they contribute without accommodations) or intervention (what accommodations they need to catch up with the average)

I mean, sometimes other objectively are low functioning, and there’s nothing wrong with that. And you can function well and have high support needs

Low functioning has a negative connotation that does not reflect how someone may live their life and implies that how they function in the world is less valuable than how another person with lower support needs does. This is how the language is shifting, to be more inclusive

The language is changing because “functioning” is also far too varying to be any usable standard. A person could be high or low functioning depending on their environment.

Just a different way to approach the topic
