as a kid i formed this thought once and it stuck with me so hard that i had this memorized list i’d go thru to be like “at least im not experiencing _____” anytime i was bored, in a little pain, or just thought of it. the signs were always there

i would also do this after i realized that i wont remember random moments (like on a 4 hour road trip you won't remember hour-2 minute-37) so i would make myself memorize random moments and make myself keep that memory for years that didn't matter

I do this after moving out from my highly dysfunctional family home LOL “at least I can be sure my dinner is safe to eat” “at least I don’t have to be afraid of arguments”

Nietzsche’s theory of “the gratitude of the convalescent” is pretty much exactly this as applied to chronic physical health conditions

Omg I do that all the time. I still have crystal clear moments of memory from like 7th grade because I had the thought “will I even remember this in 40 years? What does it matter?” While having a conversation with one of my friends and to this day it’s vivid. I may have been an existential child

Frrrrr when I get depressed like I did when I lived with my parents I’m like “you’re allowed to just go outside and take a walk” or “grab anything you want to eat without getting fat shamed or yelled at”
