I agree with you but it also makes me wonder if it’s SO wide doesn’t it begin to start being normal? If 1/4th of all of something is a certain way we tend to classify that as a variant and not a disorder anymore. Left handedness used to be considered some sort of disorder or problem until it wasn’t anymore. So what if “high functioning autism” is just .. some people experience things differently. Not saying autism isn’t real, but what if we made the category SMALLER and made being weird normal
just my theory but I think a lot of times a diagnosis or even the idea that you could have a disorder in some ways inhibits people. If you believe you’re unable to handle certain things because of your diagnosis, you might feel more validated in not doing anything to fix it. You can then say “well it’s just cus I have xyz”. And in general I think a lot of things are way too commonly diagnosed and medicated with dangerously impactful drugs. We should not be giving out SSRIs like candy.
but if I believe that I have autism and therefore cannot handle new foods, I might use that as an excuse to never try new foods. If I didn’t know I had autism and I was just labeled as a “picky eater” that is more of an encouragement to step outside of my comfort zone. Basically a diagnosis can put people in a comfort zone vs going outside of it because “nothing is actually wrong I’m just being silly” or at least that’s my experience.
