My roommate loves to yap about her day but I genuinely can’t focus on her words after all the sensory input from classes and the exhaustion from masking… I feel guilty that I can’t be 100% there for her

if it’s an internally guilty feeling rather than her making you feel guilty try to reframe it! honestly i think most people don’t expect others to listen, so you could think of it as she needs to verbally process her feelings and wants moral support rather than you needing to retain all of it. it might also help if you set aside a dedicated time to have yap sessions so you know when to be mentally present

Maybe say that you care about her and want to be there for her to yap to about her day but that you may not be able to mentally process or retain all the info she gives you

You are better than my roommate. They love talking about their interest, but as soon as I talk about mine for like 5 minutes they just say “I don’t care” or “you clearly didn’t read the room, I don’t want to listen anymore”

yeah im definitely someone who just needs to verbally process and i dont mind if the person im talking to doesn't catch everything sometimes. at the same time it can be quite exhausting trying to be a good listener so setting some boundaries and letting ur roommate know whats going on is best for both of you
