I wish sign language was a requirement, hate trying to communicate when I’m nonverbal and not a single soul knows what I need and my family gets mad at me :/

I tried taking asl for a year, and as I’m terrible at learning languages in general, it went not the best for me, but I do understand the sentiment behind this. While I’m not sure if I agree with making sign language required, we definitely need more general communication skills to be taught, as having your family upset with you shouldn’t be required either. I just wish there was an easier solution to all of this.

I’m an ASL interpreter who struggles with the same issues. Even in Rochester, it is a struggle when hospitalised.

Are you able to write down what you need?

They don’t really understand me being nonverbal at all, or most things that have to do with my autism, so they probably wouldn’t care if I wrote it down, just get pissed that I “won’t just say it”

I have a similar issue being nearly unable to learn new languages, plus I have hand issues so there are some signs I physically cannot make. I learned some basic signs, but I would not be able to hold a conversation. However me and my friend would text each other if they were nonverbal (even if we’re right next to each other
