Perhaps is it because you don’t enjoy engaging in small talk? Or you aren’t aware that’s what they’re trying to do? Typically that’s why people ask, to engage with you. They don’t really want to talk about what you’re doing, they just want to talk to you

I get SO mad it’s unbelievable. A lot of them time I have to stop myself from saying something rude to them lol
