Got my Autism diagnosis recently (disabled F) and my dad’s response was to promise that he’ll still treat me and my (neurotypical & able bodied) brother equally. He clarified that means no “special treatment”. I know he means well, but idk… ;:/ Thoughts?

Probably want to have a follow-up with him. As long as you get assurance that he won’t treat you differently than before because of a medical label, that would be great. The label is an explanation of why you may struggle in some areas and where you may need some support/leniency. If you feel you need help in some areas, notify him. Ideally nothing would change except for any expectations you feel you are holding you back

You’ll have the language and capacity to advocate for yourself in situations where necessary as time goes on. If he won’t accommodate your disability and acts like that is the “special treatment,” then he needs a FULL lesson on what your disability is and how it affects you.

He probably just meant like ok that’s fine it’s not going to change anything I will still treat you the same as my other kid not tip toe around you but didn’t know how to phrase it since it’s probably very unfamiliar territory him
