They’re not over diagnosed. We just have the proper tools and resources to finally start assessing people. That’s the same mentality of “we didn’t have all these autistics 50 years ago”. Yes we did, we just didn’t recognize it and diagnose it. 200 years ago people had mental disorders, instead of diagnoses they were called crazy and tossed in asylums. We live in the 21st century, let’s try and act like it. Pop psych is harmful, but so is this mentality.
This is just like saying that doctors give people too many diabetes diagnoses. You don’t get to say whether qualified medical professionals “overdiagnose” something, and it’s in fact very dangerous to do so. If you don’t like pop psychology, that’s one thing, and there’s a conversation to be had there, but no one qualified is “overdiagnosing” people with mental disorders, and within our system it can be very hard for people to get diagnosed and get help, especially if they’re not cis white men
