One of the reasons I stopped going to church was because I thought that me developing psoriasis was a punishment from God. I was always thinking I would be sent to hell for so many different things. I wonder how it took so long to figure out I had OCD

Looking back I realize how toxic the people “teaching” me my religion were. It was OCD hell (pun not intended). Once I was told that if you thought a certain thing that you would be “sinning”. Which of course made my brain immediately think those thoughts, causing me to believe I was going to hell or that I was being punished by God. I know now that those were intrusive thoughts and they don’t represent who I am.

Sometimes I wish I grew up in a different culture bc “Sunday school” and the way I was taught my religion conditioned me to be suspicious of myself. Always thinking I was doing something wrong and that I deserved punishment. But what I really deserved was the love and acceptance that my church preached but rarely practiced

Sorry this turned into an unintentional rant about religious trauma
