I have bipolar disorder and have been 100% stable for over a year. It feels weird claiming to be neurodivergent or advocating to set up accommodations and support systems for if I do become unstable.

its still there even if its not being debilitating. theres no shame in having help in case you have an episode again

How did you get stable, if you don’t mind me asking? My bipolar is treatment resistant, so meds tend to fuck me up more than they do anything to help. I also have borderline personality disorder too, and I know medication can have the opposite intended effect when treating borderline. I’m fairly stable now but I’m unmedicated (for like at least the last 10 years) and I know my mental health could still be a lot better.

i’ve been pretty stable for over 4 years but i am very open about the time when i wasn’t stable and needed a lot of help.

It sounds like you are having imposter syndrome

you have to advocate for yourself now because part of the reason you might be stable is because these accommodations have been in place. or they were important on your way to stabilization. you are just as valid now as you were before.

cars don’t always crash but that doesn’t mean they don’t have airbags and seatbelts in them

do you get rid of your fire extinguisher just because you’ve not had a fire in awhile? no, you keep it just in case. <3

Your car is also not the only thing on the road. Plenty of small outside factors that can push even the most stable person towards unstable behaviors. Getting a stomach bug where your meds don’t work for a couple days can fuck up even the best of us.

Diagnosed as an adolescent. 10+ years of therapy, most effective was group DBT sessions with my parents 2hrs a week for 6 months. I have a fantastic support system. Found the right med cocktail that works for me (lithium, lamotrigine, quetiapine, metformin, prazosin, and ambien). Never done drugs, alcohol, or engaged in “risky behaviors.” Incredibly in touch with myself. The second an event happens, I know exactly how it’s going to impact me and if I need to adjust my meds.
