i’m sorry man. i’m kinda in the same boat, my parents are “older” (Gen X) and they say “when we were kids Autism wasn’t a thing” well… they’re autistic too 😭

mine believe it's a thing... for men... my mom is a special ed teacher and is a huge activist for disability rights but when it comes to girls with autism she thinks we're either just rude and bitchy or trying to be quirky.

When they were kids, they were beat for being “weird” and “different” because society didn’t have the knowledge about ASD that we have now.

Have they never met anybody that has to do something a certain way, was bad socially yet really smart, etc? That’s crazy lol. My parents aren’t like this but that’s because my dad grew up with undiagnosed dyslexia. When my grandma found out I had autism, she said “this has always been there but we didn’t have a name for it. When I was growing up we just knew that their nature was different”.

That would be logical, but my parents believe it’s an attention thing because “those people functioned fine”
