Sometimes I feel so bad for doing this but then my bestie reminds me that that’s how conversations work and if the person on the receiving end gets offended they never wanted advice or empathy 🤣🤗, but we be listen tho for sure.

I have to try SO hard not to do this because I am literally just trying to empathize and continue the conversation in a way I know how, but I didn’t realize it looked like I was “making it all about me” until someone called me an asshole :(

I don’t know of any other way to empathize. I’m working on it and recognizing it in myself, because I do this a LOT. I just listen to the whole thing, nod, and say I’m sorry now. I get so lost with social queues 🙃

Yup… I feel like if I’m not responding I’m not paying attention properly. Trying to move towards vigorous nods and sympathetic noises but the impulse share how I relate is strong.

Very true! There are some times though that I’m concentrating so hard on not interrupting them that I completely forget to listen to what they’re actually saying 😭😭 it’s actually quite a problem

Can be but some people are just genuinely rude and have no active listening skills so you have to watch for that in yourself and others as well.

Some people aren’t venting for advice, they just want to be heard, and interrupting someone in the middle of a story to tell your own story is not just “how conversations work”
