I fear officially diagnosing myself. What if I’m not actually autistic? What if I’ve just been severely socially isolated and never taught how to regulate my emotions for most of my childhood? The implications of what I COULD’VE been are terrifying to me

I recommend against formal diagnosis for autism, though I do recommend it for adhd. Autism diagnosis doesn’t get you access to any new treatment options (there’s therapies, but you don’t have to be formally diagnosed to receive them) whereas adhd dx gets you medicated if you choose. For autism, it’s basically just increasing the amount of discrimination you face. Yes, I’m formally diagnosed with both.

The biggest disclaimer for this is getting accommodations in public schools. If you only have autism, it might be worth it in order to get the 504 plan. Depends on the person. Once you’re in corporate world, they just give you accommodations if you ask for them, you don’t have to prove anything.
