Sometimes under extreme stress and overwhelm our brains get so flooded with chemicals that the parts of our brains responsible for speech and reasoning don’t work properly anymore. Trying to overcome a short circuited brain during this is like turning on a light with a busted bulb, you can’t, so we gotta modify our expectations and show some empathy when this happens.
This stuff happens with autistic noggins. Especially more often with heightened sensory sensitivity, increased difficulties with emotional regulation, and other factors. Yelling at it doesn’t make it better. Shaming it doesn’t make it better. It’s not going away. Empathy and understanding help us make it through.
