PSA: Just because someone is majoring in psych, special education, or communication sciences and disorders, doesn’t mean that they’re not capable of being ableist or racist. In fact, some of the most ableist and racist people I’ve met are in these fields

Bullies seem to be drawn to those fields 🫩 It feels like many enjoy feeling superior to their patients/clients/students and having power over them

More often then not they tend to be white women. I have some fucked up stories.

This! It’s like how people think nurses are so kind and caring and often it’s the worst girls from HS that bullied everyone and thought being popular was all life was about.

Also I’m not saying that all people or all white women in these fields are bad. I’ve met some pretty kind ones too. I work in a speech pathology research lab and everyone there is kind.

As someone with a disabled brother, just because you work with a disabled population doesn't make you a hero or fantastic person. Some of his speech and physical therapists have been some of the most patronizing people I have ever met. I also cannot stand that people in these fields refuse to say "disability" and instead say "special needs." Most people with disabilities hate special needs as a term.

yeah as a trans and neurodivergent CSD major, it’s suffocating. my profs are awesome but most of the other students are white women.

Currently a communication disorders major. I am autistic, and I have seen a lot of people who are unkind. It’s unfortunate.

I got racially profiled, stalked, harassed, and assaulted by a white girl while entering and exiting my dorm building because apparently I didn’t look like I lived there. I ended up having to call campus police.

I’m going into speech pathology as an autistic Indian guy. That field is 95% women in the US and most of them are neurotypical white women.
