Possibly controversial take, but does anyone else’s get the “ick” from the, for lack of a better word, “uwu-fication” of autism on things like TikTok? The way ppl act like it’s all fidget toys and being obsessed with TV shows makes me uncomfortable as —

— someone who struggles with the less “aesthetic” parts of autism and whose special interests don’t align with popular fandoms. I understand that self-diagnosis can be an important tool for many genuinely seeking better self-understanding, but I ALSO worry that some people are “self-diagnosing” without actually taking the diagnostic criteria into account.* You can be really passionate about something and like fidget toys and NOT be autistic. It’s a disability not a quirky personality trait.

Yeah and it’s always so over the top like it’ll show the person as childish when that makes up a slim minority of people that actually have autism

I think it’s normal to be irked by infantalization Especially on tiktok it’s so rampant Uck

the rampant infantilization is so aggravating bc low support individuals like myself have to fight even harder to be taken seriously. my non-autistic brother got to get his permit at 15 and his license at 16, but my parents refused to let me get mine bc they thought my dx meant i “wouldn’t be responsible enough.” my cousin helped me with it after I turned 18; now guess which one of my mom’s kids has an accident-free/ticket-free record? hint: not my brother lmao

I think it’s mostly people trying to cope with nerodivergency being hard. Still, it’s important to have tough conversations

*By which I mean, I see a lot of folks who are self diagnosing but ignoring Criterion A (persistent deficits/difficulties in social communication and social interaction across multiple context/) and focusing only on Criterion B (restricted or repetitive interest, activities and behaviors.

I think this can ultimately really harm people because it can lead to misdiagnosis and neglect of a persons genuine support needs. One of my best friends would have absolutely been diagnoses as autistic by TikTok and the overlaps in our experiences are part of what make us such great friends. But she’s NOT autistic. She had OCPD, obsessive compulsive personality disorder. And the tools and support she needs are different from the ones I need.

It’s irritating even to see people online like “relatable” ADHD/Autism/InsterMentalHealthCondition content like “haha that’s so me” when you know they don’t have it
