putting your utensils in an x also means ‘don’t take my plate; i’m just resting’ and putting them side by side means ‘take my plate; i’m done.’ but a lot of people don’t learn that kind of stuff anymore, so it doesn’t work all the time.

i’ve only been to restaurants where you flip it over not close them so usually i just put it down when i’m ready, with the side that has my order facing up so i can be ready to look at it and say it

I usually just gather my utensils into the plate/bowl or whatever and throw a napkin on top (if not gross) to show im done

customer’s at the tavern i work at are not doing that to signal they’re done haha. definitely not a thing or taught everywhere, so just beware bc the server may not know there is a meaning to that😭

I do the French gesture for “I’m finished” where you lay your fork across the plate and stand the knife up between the middle two prongs on it
